A POWERFUL AND BIO-BASED LITTLE HELPER TO YOUR PAINT & COATINGS FORMULATIONS

Exilva microfibrillated cellulose is an exciting new non-soluble additive for waterbased paint & coating formulations. By acting both physically and chemically with the paint formulation, Exilva provide opportunities to improve the performance of your products. Exilva is also highly compatible with most of the waterbased paint & coating systems, giving you a versatile additive for use in most of your formulations. The three-dimensional network of nanofibrillated cellulose/microfibrillated cellulose is suitable for waterbased paint and coating systems, and is performing in various systems like:

Improving yield stress in your paint & coating systems - benefits during paint storage

During paint storage, Exilva give effect and improvement on anti-sedimentation, anti-settling and  anti-syneresis conditions

Sedimentation and settling is a typical problem for many paints. Exilva microfibrillated cellulose provides stabilization of solid particles (pigments & fillers) during storage, by building a pronounced yield stress. This unique stabilization effect originates from the physical three-dimensional network Exilva provides. The high storage modulus and clear yield stress that Exilva transfers to the paint system increases your ability to find anti-settling and anti-sedimentation advantages, improving the quality of your paint.

Dig deeper in how Exilva provides anti-settling and anti-sedimentation in this webinar video hosted by Jochum Beetsma

Syneresis can be reduced when using Exilva for rheology and stability purposes. How can I improve my syneresis problems by utilizing Exilva? Download our bulletin on anti-syneresis with Exilva here.

Tinting of paints has historically seen problems with viscosity instability after the universal colors have entered the paint base. Paint systems with Exilva as a rheology modifier do not practically show any viscosity drop compared to other water-soluble rheology alternatives. Exilva also ensures the same rheology curve for the paint after before and after tinting. You will experience an increasingly trustworthy and stable paint on viscosity at storage as well as during application, regardless of the tinting of colors.                                                                                                                                Read more on how to avoid viscosity loss after tinting of waterbased paints by using the Exilva technology.

Improving anti-sag without sacrificing leveling - benefits from Exilva when applying the paint

One of the strongholds of the Exilva microfibrillated cellulose technology is its ability to give substantial effects on the paint´s behaviour when being applied. It is especially suited for spray paints, due to its extreme shear thinning and very low time delay on recovery of the viscosity but is also suitable for brushed and rolled paints together with secondary thickener.

Sag resistance is one of the most important functionalities for a spray paint. When a paint experience problem with sagging, it can often be due to insufficient recovery of the viscosity after shear is removed. By adding Exilva, you will experience very high viscosity at low shear which under shear forces is turned to very low viscosity at high shear. After shear is removed, Exilva quickly returns to its initial viscosity, giving the paint very little time to experience sagging, but still allowing good levelling. Remember; it is important to evaluate the performance of Exilva at low shear, as well as testing sagging and levelling to confirm the benefits of Exilva.

Improving anti-blocking, wet edge, mud-cracking and adhesion - benefits from Exilva during drying of the paint

Through its ability to improve toughness of the paint film when drying and the dried coating film, Exilva provides added benefits to your formulations

Mud-cracking is usually found in waterbased paints and can often be due to lack of control in the drying phase, or more specifically due to applied film thickness and drying temperature Exilva reduces the tendency for mud-cracking during drying by keeping the surface open. This in turn provides the opportunity to reduce open time extenders and related VOC levels in your paints. Read more on how the Exilva technology reduce mud-cracking.

Wet edge can be a significant problem for wood coatings. By controlling the open time through its unique properties, Exilva can enable you with a tool to reduce wet edge problems. Exilva increases the open time and reduce the tackiness of the coating film by preventing the skinning of the drying film. This will speed up the drying process and at the same time prevent any possible blistering. Learn how Exilva MFC can help your wet edge performance.

Anti-blocking is a well-known area for paint & coating manufacturers. Exilva allows for reduced blocking problems, as it reduces the tackiness and increases the viscosity of the drying paint formulation on the substrate. This in turn enable you to avoid unwanted adhesions during production, for example when stacking pieces of painted furniture elements early after paint is applied. This can increase speed of production and storage efficacy.

Adhesion to the substrate is critical to paint & coatings. Exilva enables very good adhesion to metal, glass and concrete, in addition to wood. The coating film in which Exilva contributes, has a lower water absorption and higher tensile strength with good elongation.
